GRIEF Resources:

Mary's Place, A Center for Grieving Children & Families (supported by the Carmon family funeral homes),

Non-profit organization, provides a safe place in which children, teens and families who are grieving a death share their experiences, receive support and find comfort. Not therapeutic. Currently there are free teen support groups for those grieving for a sibling, parent, or friend. Call Lisa for an application. There is also a young widows group, a Begin Again adults group for those experiencing any loss, a resource center & library. Recommended Teen Grief Journal: Fire In My Heart, Ice In My Veins.

Lisa Peluso R.N. (available summers also) 6 Poquonock Ave., Windsor, CT 06095, (860) 688-9621

www.marysplacect.org has information on grief and recommended books

* A Services of Remembrance, an interfaith service, is held yearly near Memorial Day for families to formally remember a family member. This was created by Carmon Community Funeral Homes in partnership with Mary's Place.

New Day Counseling Center, a new (2010) partnership with the Carmon family funeral homes

No cost bereavement support groups, currently for those grieving the death of a spouse or parent. Educational programs. Individual, couple, or family therapy, including for grief, is on a sliding fee scale starting at $55/hour.

Debbi Knox, MS, MFT, Certified Grief Recovery Specialist and Family Therapist.

412 West Avon Rd. Avon, CT 06001 860 269-0510 www.NewDayCounselingCenter.com

The Cove

Helps grieving children and teenagers learn healing and coping strategies, as well as creative communication, that help validate their emotions and guide them toward transforming their unresolved grief. 22 week Family Program: family with children of any age attends group led by a professional to grieve a death in the immediate family. Butterfly release, visit funeral home, other activities. No charge, but donations requested.

Valerie Cordiano, licensed MFT (Marriage and Family Therapist), director for 13 years

Individual & family counseling is year round, $90 / hour. She does not take insurance.

854 Farmington Ave, W. Hartford, CT (860) 233-1700

www.CoveCT.org (203) 634 0500 (There are also COVE's in Meriden, Guilford & New Haven)

Valerie's shared wisdom for parents:

  1. It's best to talk about the death and grief, even though it goes against parents' intuition when a child seems "fine", otherwise the child will likely have outbursts and extreme behavior. Grief is safer if we talk about it. Express your opinion to your child and review what you child may or may not know about grief.

  2. Expect confusion.

  3. Thoughts of grief may surface again years later.

  4. For parents of elementary and middle school students she recommends the book Guiding Your Child Through Grief.

  5. For parents of teens she recommends The Dougy Center, http://www.dougy.org/.

(Another resource is books by Alan Wolfelt for grieving teens.)

Your place of worship is also likely another great resource.
